Defending today’s students

I just received the current issue, and the opening paragraph of the Fackenthal article (“Fackenthal’s tiles,” Autumn 2006) struck a strange note with me: “From students in the 1940s recalling their World War II experiences, to students in the 1970s arguing about the Watergate scandal, to today’s students conversing on their cell phones about an upcoming event at their College houses…” I doubt that the intention was to trivialize the concerns of your current students, but I have to wonder how they feel when they read this. I have seen the energy and commitment of many of these students; maybe this could have been phrased in a less-disparaging term.

Correction

Joanne D. Altman, Ph.D., ’84 e-mailed to let us know that one of our captions in the Autumn 2006 issue was incorrect. She writes, “While I love to catch up with the F&M news, as an animal behaviorist, I feel compelled to correct the picture caption on page 13. Koalas are not bears! They are marsupials.”
